IESA Educators Named Illinois Outstanding Educator Award Winners / NFHS National Nominees

The Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) is honored to announce that Curtis Fischer-Oelschlaeger of Rockridge Junior High School (Music) and Shauna Segler of Dunlap Middle School (Speech) have been selected as the Illinois Outstanding Music Educator and Outstanding Speech Educator for the 2025-26 school year!

Both individuals are the middle school state-level winners and the national nominees for the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) Outstanding Educator Awards. This is the first year NFHS has recognized educators at the middle school level, with national winners to be announced later in the 2025-26 school year. Nominees for the NFHS Outstanding Educator Awards must exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct and carry the endorsement of their respective state association. An NFHS awards committee reviews nominations and selects regional award winners.

Curtis Fischer-Oelschlaeger, known as "Mr. O" has been the heart of the Rockridge Music Program for 28 years. He has hosted contests for more than 20 years, served on the IESA Music Advisory Committee, and works closely with both elementary and high school music staff to create a thriving, cohesive program. His leadership has inspired students at every level and helped Rockridge Music become one of the premier programs in Illinois.

Shauna Segler, coach of the Dunlap Middle School Speech Team, has built one of the most inclusive and dynamic junior high speech programs in the state. Each year, she welcomes 80 to 100 students, fostering confidence, camaraderie, and communication skills. Beyond coaching, Shauna has hosted numerous contests, served as a judge, and presented at the IESA Speech Workshop.

The IESA congratulates Curtis and Shauna on this well-deserved state recognition and wishes them the very best as they move forward in the national selection process!

Congratulations to the Rockridge High School November Student of the Month, Leah DeCook!

Leah has demonstrated four years of commitment across both athletics and student government. She has been heavily involved in volleyball, basketball, and track from her Freshmen through Senior year, and is a four-year member of the Student Council, where she currently serves as Vice President. She also holds a leadership position in the Plant Club. Leah recently broke a school record in volleyball for having a 100% serving percentage. She has attended the state track meet as a freshman for the 4x4 relay, and as a junior for the 4x4 relay, 4x2 relay, and high jump. She was the captain of the volleyball team and is now the captain of the basketball team. She enjoys the staff and her fellow classmates that she has gotten to know during her time here at Rockridge. Following graduation, Leah plans to attend Augustana College to begin her studies in Elementary Education.

Here are some notes from our staff about Leah:

Leah is active in the Student Council as Vice-President, leader of the Plant Club, volleyball starter, basketball captain (3 year starter), High Honor Roll, and active in Spanish Club. Mr. Stroud

Leah is an incredibly hardworking student! In her dual credit class, Leah is often the leader and someone who students go to for help. Along with being involved and a great student, Leah truly embodies being a Rocket, as she is supportive of all athletics and students at the High School. Leah is an exemplary student all around. She continues to show up every day with a positive attitude and willingness to learn. Leah is a great role model to her peers, as she is involved in sports, clubs, and is high achieving with her academics. Leah is incredibly deserving to be student of the month. Ms. Hatchel

Leah is a spark of positive energy here at school! She is happy and outgoing, and participates in class. She represents Rockridge with pride in athletics, clubs, and the student section. She is a great role model for the younger kids! Ms. Tricia Graves

Leah is an excellent student! She's a great addition to the volleyball team. She did excellent work in Spanish 3 first hour last year, always got her homework done, and she always remembers my birthday! She's very good with movie recommendations too! Mr. O’Neill

Leah DeCook is a dedicated, intelligent, compassionate artist and student! Leah is in my Intro class and she is always on top of her projects, making sure they are exquisite. Every week during football season she and others have made these amazing works of art for the student section and installed them every home game! Last week she completed all of her work and helped make playoff signs for the football game! Leah is a kind and lovable soul who will make a difference in this world one day! Mrs. Densberger

I am not surprised that Leah DeCook is our Student of the Month. She brings incredible energy and leadership to everything she does. As Vice President of the Student Council, she is organized, reliable, and always ready to help out. Leah is the kind of leader people want to follow—funny, positive, and super friendly. She makes everyone feel welcome and is truly a joy to be around. We’re lucky to have her! Mrs. Reed

Leah is an exceptionally hardworking student who consistently goes above and beyond in everything she does. She’s involved in many different school activities, bringing energy, leadership, and positivity wherever she goes. Known as a true social butterfly, Leah connects easily with everyone around her and helps create a welcoming, friendly atmosphere. Her dedication, involvement, and upbeat spirit make her a wonderful role model and an invaluable part of our school community. Mr. Smith

HUGE congratulations to the very first WRMJ Teacher of the Month: Shelby Hatchel!
Ms. Hatchel is an outstanding addition to our high school teaching staff. She is an English teacher, and is currently in her second year at Rockridge (fifth year overall). She is already making a significant and positive impact on her students and the entire school community. The selection process was highly competitive, with WRMJ receiving over 40 nominations from across the region. Ms. Hatchel stood out by a landslide among this incredible group of educators. Thank you to WRMJ, Scotter's Coffee, and PuroClean for recognizing and celebrating Ms. Hatchel.
