This week begins National School Bus Safety Week! 🚍
Did you know, the greatest risk to children isn’t while they’re actually riding the bus; it’s during the loading and unloading process, often referred to as the “danger zone” — the 10-foot area around the bus where children are most at risk of being hit by a vehicle or even the bus itself. This is where visibility is low and children may act unpredictably, crossing behind or in front of the bus without being seen.
Here are a few key safety reminders:
For Children: 👧🧒
--Stay 10 feet away from the front, back, and sides of the bus when waiting or after exiting.
--Wait for the driver's signal before crossing the street.
--Never bend down near the bus, even if you drop something.
--Always use sidewalks and crosswalks, and look both ways before crossing the road.
For Drivers: 🚘
--Always stop for school buses when the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing.
--Slow down in school zones and near bus stops.
--Stay alert — children can be unpredictable.
